According to The Times, Atletico Madrid are looking to make room in their roster for Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo by releasing Antoine Griezmann.

Los Rojiblancos are one of the major European clubs connected with a move for Ronaldo, who has told United that he wants to leave this summer in order to compete in the Champions League next season. The Mail claimed this week that the 37-year-old may be interested in joining Atletico Madrid after nine years at archrival Real Madrid.

By releasing Griezmann from his contract, the Spanish club might free up finances to support a Ronaldo move. The France international is gearing up for the second season of a two-year loan from Barcelona, with an option to make the transfer permanent for €40 million next summer.

While Atletico Madrid is attempting to trade Griezmann, the Mirror says that United may let Ronaldo to depart on loan for a season in exchange for him extending his contract by a year until 2024.

Ronaldo has failed to arrive for preseason training with Erik ten Hag’s team, and the Guardian believes that United will seek clarification on the No. 7’s status this week before making a decision on his future.
