According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea is willing to pay the £105 million release clause in Enzo Fernandez’s contract in order to sign him early in the January transfer window.

On Friday night, Fernandez, 21, had a bad start to his club career as Benfica lost shockingly to Braga 3-0. The international from Argentina, who had just won the World Cup and had been the competition’s best young player, played for 89 minutes before being replaced.

However, with Chelsea now prepared to activate the clause, it might be his final game for the Portuguese club. According to the Daily Mail, the only issue that hasn’t been resolved is whether Chelsea should pay the money all at once or in payments.

Chelsea, eager to secure a spot ahead of Liverpool and Manchester United, met with Benfica club president Rui Costa and super-agent Jorge Mendes.
